RBD Block Challenge

I just have to make one more block and I'll have my 16 blocks completed for the challenge.

I belong to a Facebook page for this group and people have been talking about a 17th block!  I don't know how the odd number will fit into a quit setting, and am very excited to see what the mystery is.

Luckily, I have two extra blocks that I made at the beginning that I can use :) I really love all these Tasha Noel fabrics, have always wanted to make a quilt out of them!

I'll show you my progress later.  Thanks for following along!

WIP

I've been working on a lot of projects, but don't have any cute photos to show you except the blocks on my design wall.

I'm up to date on the Riley Blake Design Block challenge, using Tasha Noel fabric.  I made another leaf block and another block with the heart in the center.  I made use the duplicates on the back of the quilt. I have 8 blocks completed, so halfway there.  The blocks are released every Tuesday, except for the last Tuesday of the month.

I'm also making the Heartfelt blocks from Fat Quarter shop. I had a fat quarter bundle of "Just Red" by Zen Chic and have been looking for something special to make with it.  I am using the beautiful Corey Yoder background just like the pattern.

I'm also enjoying the 31 days of Amy's Creative Side's Instagram quilt fest.  Sometimes it's a little challenging finding the photo, but it's so much fun seeing what other people write about.

Have a great Quilty week!

Riley Blake Design Block Challenge

I just can't refuse a "sew along"!  Lori Holt designed the first block called Daisy Chain and that just melted my heart ❤️

I'm tempted to make a whole quilt out of this block, it's 10" square.

I changed my color scheme.  I'm still going to use Tasha Noel fabric but it won't be as scrappy.  With my previous blocks, I just chose the Tasha Noel prints and colors that I thought would look good in the block.  Now, I chose 5 colors, 2 prints of each.

(The polka dot isn't Tasha Noel, don't know if I'll use it yet)

I think it will have a much more uniform look.

This is my previous Sweetheart block, when I just chose cute colors :)

This is my current block with the new color scheme,
a selection of five colors.

This is the leaf block which I totally love and may still use...

This is my new leaf block which I love also!

Block #4 is the tulip block.

Here are all four of my blocks with the new color scheme, just 5 colors.  I love Tasha Noel fabric and I know this quilt will be so pretty when it's finished.  The background I'm using is called pink posy by Lori Holt.

Happy Quilting everyone ❤️❤️❤️

RBD Mystery Block of the Month - August

August's Riley Blake Design mystery block of the month is a Dresden block.
I have always wanted to make one of these blocks and it is so easy!
I really want to make a quilt with dresdens.
There are 20 different petals in this block, it was fun choosing all the different shades and prints of pink.
I don't really know why I'm making this quilt in pink, (maybe it's because I have 7 grand daughters) but I do need to sash in a different color to subdue all the pink!
Here is a link to my Pinterest Board where you can find the tutorial for August's Dresden block.

Here's a close up of all the different prints.
My fabric stash has definately grown in the past 5 years!

September will be the last of nine blocks and then I'll be able to assemble all nine blocks into a quilt :)

RBD Mystery Block of the Month - July

This month's block is called "There is No Place Like Home".
Sounds a little bit like the Wizard of Oz, doesn't it?  LOL!
July is block #6, there will be 9 in all.
If you would like to look at my board on Pinterest, I have pinned all the tutorials and posted the blocks I have made as well.
I've kept all my blocks really pink with a touch of pale blue.
I'm anxious to do something really different with the sashing!

Riley Blake Design Mystery Block of the Month - June

Riley Blake Design's block of the month for June is their signature bird, and it's called "Birds of a Feather".

Riley Blake Designs

The link for the "how to" video is here.
I wanted to make the "needle turn" applique bird, there were eleven  pieces.
I didn't have a template for the bird, so I eyeballed where to applique the pieces on the bird.
I love my little Riley Blake bird :)

These are my other blocks, they're pretty pink, aren't they?
I'm going to sash them in a totally different color and I'm really looking forward to putting it all together, I love choosing fabrics.

Riley Blake Mystery Block of the Month - May

I have a box full of selvages, I love them!

This is the first time I have sewn with them.

It was so much fun choosing which ones to use :)

Making a selvage quilt is on my to do list.

I made this block 3 times!
The first time, my block wasn't big enough.
I didn't print the pattern (actual size), and that ruined the dimensions.
The third time was a charm!

Here are the rest of my blocks, there will be 9 in all.

These blocks are easy and I love choosing the colors and prints!
I'm using so much pink, but am going to add a bold, bright color for the sashing and border.

I know that May's block will be incorporating selvages.

Riley Blake Design Block of the Month - March

I am really enjoying the RBD block of the month.
This block was so quick to measure, cut and sew
The name of the block is Simplicity.
I am designing all of my blocks in pinks.
I'm going to choose a totally different color for the sashing!
You can see the block on RBD's blog here.

February's block:

January's block:

That's a lot of pink!!!
April's block is simple also.
May's block will be using selvages.
I can hardly wait, I have a shoe box full of selvages waiting for me.

Riley Blake Block of the Month-February

February's block is a paper pieced heart.
I have only done one paper pieced before, my dots on dots block.
I have a simple tutorial here.
I cut the heart along the dark lines, there were six numbered sections.  I set the stitch length really short on my machine.
You sew fabric 1 to fabric 2 and sew the fabric right through the paper.  Then add number 3, and so on.

Here are all 6 completed sections.

I'm sewing the different sections together.

All of the sections are sewn together and it's time to tear off the paper.

The stitch length was so small or close together, that it perforated the paper making it very easy to tear.

The paper's all torn off but it sure doesn't look like a heart!
Notice how there is a seem going down the middle and another going across the middle.

I took my 13" square base fabric and traced the heart template with pencil.  Then I trimmed l/4" away inside the heart.

The pencil line is the stitching line.
I will place the patchwork fabric under the heart opening and applique with the needle turn method.

I attached the heart opening onto the fabric with applique glue (Roxanne's glue baste).  I have my straw needles, cotton thread and needle threader, all tools of the trade :)
Do you see the fabric underneath the pink fabric?
I won't trim it until I have finished appliqueing.

Straw needles are great for applique, but the eye is so teeny weeny that a fancy needle threader is a necessity, even for the best eyes!

I finished the needle turn applique and trimmed the fabric underneath so that only the l/4" seam allowance is visible.
This seam disappears when the batting and backing are added.
I love my pink heart!  I know that it's a lot of pink.....I am thinking about introducing a new color in the sashing.

Here are January and February's blocks, I'm anxious to see what the  March block will be.
